Winter Fuel Payment 2026/27: Amounts, Dates and Claims

Most eligible pension-age households in England, Wales and Northern Ireland should receive £100 to £300 automatically in November or December 2026. Check the qualifying dates, household amount and claim rules rather than assuming every pensioner receives the same sum.

The short answer: check the letter before planning the money

The Winter Fuel Payment for 2026/27 is worth between £100 and £300 for eligible people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. You normally qualify if you were born on or before 27 June 1960 and usually live in one of those three nations. Your exact amount depends on your age, who you lived with during the qualifying week of 21 to 27 September 2026, and whether either of you received certain means-tested benefits.

Most eligible people do not need to apply. A letter should explain the amount and bank account, and most payments arrive in November or December 2026. If you do need to claim, the deadline is 31 March 2027. Scotland has a separate Pension Age Winter Heating Payment instead.

This is money to help with heating costs, not a reduction applied directly to a gas tariff. It does not change your unit rate, standing charge or meter readings. Use the payment alongside an accurate bill forecast so you know how much of the winter cost it is likely to cover.

Who can get the Winter Fuel Payment in 2026/27?

For this winter, the basic age test is a date of birth on or before 27 June 1960. You must also usually live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. The government uses the week from 21 to 27 September 2026 to assess household circumstances, so the person you lived with and your situation during that week can change the amount.

There are exclusions. GOV.UK says you are not eligible if you normally live elsewhere and were only visiting during the qualifying week, were in prison for all of that week, had been receiving free hospital treatment for that week and the preceding year, or have immigration permission that prevents access to public funds. Separate rules apply to care-home residents.

A care-home resident can qualify, but not if they both received Universal Credit, Pension Credit or income-related Employment and Support Allowance and had lived in the care home continuously since 29 June 2026 or earlier. Check the official eligibility page for unusual living arrangements rather than relying on a general checklist.

How much Winter Fuel Payment will you get?

A person who lives alone, or lives only with people who are not eligible, receives £200 if born from 28 September 1946 to 27 June 1960, or £300 if born before 28 September 1946. Where two eligible people live together and neither gets a relevant means-tested benefit, the payment is normally split according to age.

If a couple jointly claims Pension Credit, Universal Credit or income-related Employment and Support Allowance, one person normally receives the household amount: £200 if both were born from 28 September 1946 to 27 June 1960, or £300 if either was born before 28 September 1946. Other benefit and care-home arrangements can produce a different individual amount.

Common Winter Fuel Payment amounts for 2026/27
Household situationBorn 28 Sep 1946 to 27 Jun 1960Born before 28 Sep 1946
Living alone, or with no other eligible person£200£300
Living with another eligible person; no listed benefit£100£200 if the other person is younger; £150 if both are 80 or over
Joint claim for a listed means-tested benefitOne household payment of £200One household payment of £300 if either person is 80 or over
Eligible care-home resident£100£150

The official amount depends on each person’s date of birth, household and benefit position during 21 to 27 September 2026. Your award letter takes priority over this summary.

Do you need to claim, and when is it paid?

Most eligible people are paid automatically. GOV.UK says you should not need to claim if you receive the State Pension or one of several listed benefits, including Pension Credit, Universal Credit, Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payment or Carer’s Allowance.

You may need to claim if you do not receive any of the listed payments and either have never received a Winter Fuel Payment or deferred your State Pension after your last one. Claims opened by post on 21 September and by phone on 19 October 2026. The final deadline is 31 March 2027.

Most automatic payments are made in November or December. The letter should state both the amount and the destination bank account, usually the account used for your State Pension or benefits. If neither the letter nor payment has arrived by 27 January 2027, GOV.UK says to contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.

  • First: check for the official October or November letter.
  • Then: confirm whether you receive a benefit that makes payment automatic.
  • If a claim is needed: use the GOV.UK form or official phone route by 31 March 2027.
  • If payment is missing: contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre after 27 January 2027.

What happens if your income is over £35,000?

The payment is issued to eligible pensioners, but HMRC recovers its full value from an individual whose total annual income is over £35,000. Your partner’s income does not count towards your individual threshold. This is a recovery charge equal to the payment, not a reduction in the amount first sent to you.

HMRC normally collects the charge by adjusting a PAYE tax code. If you file Self Assessment, it is dealt with through the return instead. People who received certain means-tested benefits during the qualifying week are not liable to the charge regardless of income; the official HMRC guidance lists the protected benefits.

The opt-out date for the 2026 payment has passed, so do not send money to an unsolicited caller or payment link. Check the HMRC guidance and your tax record. A genuine recovery is handled through PAYE or Self Assessment, not by asking for bank or card details in a message.

Scotland uses a separate pension-age heating payment

People living in Scotland do not receive the DWP Winter Fuel Payment. Social Security Scotland instead pays Pension Age Winter Heating Payment. For winter 2026/27 it is worth between £105.55 and £316.70, depending on household circumstances, and most eligible people are paid automatically.

The Scottish qualifying week is also 21 to 27 September 2026, with the age test tied to reaching pension age by its end. Payments start later in 2026 and continue through the winter. The same £35,000 individual-income recovery principle applies through HMRC.

Do not use the England, Wales and Northern Ireland amount table to predict a Scottish award. Use the Social Security Scotland eligibility checker and guidance because the payment values and administration are different.

Turn the payment into a realistic gas-heating budget

Treat the payment as part of the household budget, not as a promise that the whole winter gas bill is covered. Start with recent meter readings, your actual gas unit rate and standing charge, and the number of days you want to plan. Enter those figures in the gas bill calculator to estimate the period cost.

For example, suppose the next gas bill is estimated at £180 and the household expects a £200 Winter Fuel Payment. Setting aside £180 would cover that forecast and leave £20 for a later bill. If the forecast is £260, the same payment leaves £60 to find from regular income or other support. The useful calculation is payment minus forecast bill, not payment divided by a national “typical” bill that may not resemble your home.

Keep the payment separate from other schemes. You may also qualify for the Warm Home Discount, but that is a different £150 energy-account credit with its own rules. If the forecast remains unaffordable, use our gas bill help guide and contact the supplier early about an affordable plan.

Simple payment-versus-bill examples
Expected paymentForecast gas billAmount left or short
£200£180£20 left for a later bill
£200£260£60 still to budget
£300£260£40 left for a later bill

These are budgeting examples, not typical bills. Use your own readings and tariff.

Check changes and avoid payment scams

Report relevant changes such as moving home, changing bank details or a change in household circumstances through the official Winter Fuel Payment route. Do not assume the payment will follow an old address or account without checking.

Government guidance warns about calls, emails and messages that ask for personal or financial details. Most recipients are paid automatically, and someone who genuinely needs to claim should start from GOV.UK. Do not follow a surprise link that promises to release or speed up the payment.

Keep the award letter, note the payment date and compare the amount with the official table. If the amount looks wrong, contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre using the number published on GOV.UK rather than contact details supplied in an unsolicited message.
